Connecting locals since 1983

Back in 1983, a group of Westgarth locals wanted to create a friendly space for people to come together, learn and support one another. That’s how Jika Jika Community Centre started – a place built on community and inclusivity.

Today, we have two sites in Northcote, offering a welcoming spot for you to drop in for a cuppa and a chat, as well as take part in over 30 activities and programs each week. Join us for everything from social events to health and wellbeing, and music, movement and dance programs. It's all about connecting, learning and inspiring our local community. You can also rent out our various community spaces for workshops, social events and clubs.

Beyond our programs, we're committed to providing community support to locals in need, such as via our free food program. We also actively engage in social justice to create a more equitable and inclusive community.

Guided by community values

Following the Neighbourhood Houses movement, which was started by inspiring Australian women back in the 1970s, we follow the principles of community ownership, inclusion, empowerment and lifelong learning. Our mission is all about helping locals connect, grow and thrive together. At Jika Jika, everyone belongs.

We’re part of the North East Neighbourhood House Network, where Neighbourhood Houses actively work together to provide direct support to their respective communities.

Our name and people

Jika Jika Community Centre sits on Wurundjeri land. We proudly carry the name of Billibellary, a respected Wurundjeri leader known as Jika Jika. He played a big role in early interactions between the Wurundjeri people and the new settlers along the Yarra River. We pay our respects to the traditional owners of this land, the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation.

The passionate people behind the magic

Our team is made up of amazing staff, volunteers and local supporters. They're the heart of what we do – making our community stronger every day.
